When you purchase your travel insurance for family holidays, you will more than likely be doing so in order to give yourself peace of mind that your group will be financially protected in a range of situations. However, there are some things that are not typically included in such policies, and you should be aware of these before you make your purchase.

Dangerous Activities

Many policies will have restrictions on the types of activities that you can (and can't) do when you go abroad. You will normally be able to find a list of things that are covered, which may cover standard activities like swimming and running. However, more dangerous activities like bungee jumping and skydiving may not be covered, and you may need to purchase a separate policy for these.

You must check the list of activities covered in your policy before you take part in them whilst you are away. If you get injured while doing an activity that is not covered, you may have your claim refused. Also remember that most standard policies do not cover winter sports like snowboarding and skiing, so these should be covered in a separate policy.

Travel in Dangerous Areas

When buying travel insurance for family holidays, make sure that you find out which countries may not covered. Most policies will cover you for worldwide travel or in certain regions, but there are often countries that are considered too dangerous to visit. You should check the latest information to find out any countries not considered safe before you travel, as you may not be able to get cover for these.

Expensive Items

There may also be restrictions on expensive items that you take away with you when you buy travel insurance for family vacations. For example, if you take away an expensive laptop or item of jewellery and you lose it or it is stolen, you may find that your policy does not cover you for the full price. This is because there are often per-item limits in place, so either keep expensive items at home or make sure they are insured separately.

Always Read the Terms Carefully

There may be any number of things that are not covered under your particular policy, so don't assume that you are always covered for everything. Read through the terms carefully and ask your provider if you do not understand anything. You may find that you are not covered for pre-existing conditions, or that there are certain procedures in place such as getting a police report for any items that are stolen before you can make a claim - so always find out the details before you go.

Family adventures abroad can sometimes be stressful, so you really don't need to add any more worry than necessary. When you purchase your all-important travel insurance for family holidays, make sure you know what is and what is not included, and be especially careful of any situations where you may not be covered.
